Local lifeguards are testing out a new technology to use during rescues. The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department now has a drone to give rescuers an eye-in-the-sky view during a critical time. Firefighter Sam Proffitt knows all too well how life can change in an instant. That’s why he’s working to improve public safety through a study with Penn State University. He says they are now using drones or what he calls an “unmanned aerial vehicle” on calls to find out the benefits. “Missing swimmer, missing person, rescues, perhaps out at Masonboro Island, and then also having a coordinated effort with the city and county for an type of events that they would need to use a UAV for,” he said. He says the protocol during rescue calls will stay the same. This will be just an added resource. Carolina Beach Fire Department is expected to be a part of the study too.
