Firefighters in boats had to rescue residents from their homes off South Reilly Road because of severe flooding Wednesday night.
Thunderstorms rattled much of the Cape Fear region throughout the afternoon and late into the evening.
About 9 p.m., Battalion Chief Michael Martin said the flooding trapped multiple residents in their homes on Wayland Drive and Glen Allen Street near the intersection of Cliffdale Road, requiring emergency rescue teams from the Fire Department to save them. Sheila Shipp, of the 500 block of Wayland Drive, said she had knee-deep water in her home.
Martin said six residents were evacuated from a group home threatened by rising water. Firefighters also assisted other residents in the area, getting them to safety.
Martin said several vehicles were stranded by high water at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Carson Drive.
