An annual ceremony honoring the first recorded line of duty firefighter death in North Carolina was held in the east Saturday. First responders, law enforcement officers, city officials and community members gathered at the Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS Department to honor the life and legacy of Edward Peed. Peed died in 1902 while fighting a fire with the Salamander Volunteer Fire Company. On Saturday, a candle was lit in his honor and those gathered sung songs and placed a wreath on a monument that was built for him in 2000.
