When Willie Carter and Robert Grier started with the Winston-Salem Fire Department, they knew their jobs would be critically important.
Not only were they keeping Winston-Salem residents safe, they were two of the first black men to do it.
At the fourth annual public safety black history month celebration held at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, retired fire Capt. Carter, retired fire engineer Grier and Winston-Salem Police’s retired evidence specialist Rose Jones were honored at the event for their service to their respective departments.
Sunday’s event was led by retired police Lt. James Berry.
