Cumberland County commissioners voted unanimously Monday to reactivate a Public Safety Task Force to look at funding and staffing issues in rural fire departments. The task force also will make recommendations to commissioners for next year's budget. Fire districts could face revenue issues if their tax rates aren't raised, because property value declined in this year's revaluation. County Manager Amy Cannon said small, rural fire departments are having ongoing issues with funding and staff. "We believe this may be an appropriate time to reactivate the Public Safety Task Force," she said. The Public Safety Task Force initially was formed in 2008 and made recommendations two years later regarding municipal and volunteer fire departments, emergency medical services and 911 communications.
