Fire crews were busy working to extinguish flames early Thursday morning at an east Charlotte home.
Firefighters were called around 8:40 a.m. to the house on Manchester Lane, just off Albemarle Road, and when they arrived reported seeing heavy flames and smoke. A neighbor told Channel 9 that a woman inside the home was reading when she saw flames coming from her kitchen. She tried to put out the fire herself, but then took her walker and went to the neighbor's house to call for help.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the flames knocked down, but officials said a cat and a dog died after becoming trapped in the fire.
Firefighters tried to give them CPR but they did not survive.
"She's worried about the animal. She loved that little dog you know," neighbor Muhammad Kabbany said.
