The Gastonia Fire Department showed up to see heavy flames coming from a home on Scruggs Street on Friday morning. Heavy smoke was coming from the front of the home after flames charred the back of the residence, according to Gastonia Fire Chief Phil Welch. Welch and his firefighters confirmed no one was inside the home at the time of the fire after a sweep of the house. It took his crews less than 15 minutes to put out the flames. Chief Welch called out the Fire Marshal to "determine the origin of the fire."
