Former Cove City fire chief takes plea deal in embezzlement case

A former fire chief in the east accepted a plea deal after the District Attorney's Office says he embezzled $5,700 from the department. Tony Banks, 39, was the chief of the Cove City Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department from 2012 until 2016. According to Craven County District Attorney Scott Thomas, Banks plead guilty to one county of larceny. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was suspended, and was placed on supervised probation for year. He will also have to perform 48 hours of community service and was ordered to pay back the $5,700 plus investigation costs to the county.
