The Rocky Mount Fire Department is celebrating two new firsts as it moves into the second half of the year.
The department recently tapped Kim Wittig, Rocky Mount fire and life safety educator, as its new administrative captain, its version of a public information officer. Wittig was officially promoted to the post on June 8 and started her duties — including handling press releases, social media and other related responsibilities — June 19.
Fire Chief Mike Varnell said 25 to 30 people from in- and out-of-state applied for the position. He said Wittig was chosen because of her qualifications and potential.
