A national memorial service Sunday honored the firefighters across the country who died in the line of duty, nine of those firefighters were from North Carolina.
The 36th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service honored a total of 95 firefighters during a ceremony in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The event brought together hundreds of family members, friends and fellow firefighters to the national memorial site. The U.S. Fire Service paid tribute to 75 firefighters who died in 2016, along with 20 others lost in past years and added each of their names to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
