Firefighters had a busy weekend across Columbus County, as three homes were destroyed and two families left without shelter. No injuries were reported in any of the fires. Deputy Fire Marshall Josh Cartrette said a fire Friday at the Sydney home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Cribb was caused by an electrical malfunction. The home was about 50 percent damaged, he said. “It can’t be occupied at this time,” Cartrette said. Williams Township was assisted by personnel and equipment from Brunswick, Tabor City Fire and Rescue, and Nakina Fire and Rescue. An explosive fire Sunday morning in south Whiteville that was reportedly heard in Bolton is still under investigation, Cartrette said.
