Multiple departments rushed to put out and early morning house fire in Winterville on Saturday. Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire at 2661 Railroad Street after the homeowner called for help at 1:31 a.m. According to Tony Smart, the Fire Marshall for the Town of Winterville, the fire started in the chimney. The chimney had a crack, which allowed the fire to spread to a wood stud in the wall. From there the flames traveled up the wall and spread in the attic. Smart said the homeowner was renovating that house and lives in the home next door. He tried to put out the blaze himself, but made it outside safely. No one was injured.
