A local pharmaceutical company is giving first responders a dose in the form of donations to help them launch a new screening for cancer. Alcami hosted the public Wednesday afternoon as it unveiled a new initiative to support the Wilmington Fire Department. The company donated $15,000 to go towards an IV gene test. This test looks at various signs that could lead to cancer in a person. The department says this donation will help them progress in taking more action in keeping firefighters safe after they come in contact with cancerous materials while battling fires. “When we’re able to do that we hope to certainly get a quicker diagnosis, but also begin treatment early if that’s necessary,” WFD Deputy Fire Chief Jon Mason said. “So this is sort of a next step for us in taking care of our people.” The department currently provides health screening and physical but this will be the first time they can actively test for cancer.
