Several racehorses died and several others were injured in a fire at a barn in Robeson County. Red Springs Fire Chief John Ammons says fire crews were dispatched to a barn on Jockey Lane shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arriving, fire crews could see smoke and flames. 8 horses died and eight other horses were injured in the fire, according to Ammons. He says they likely died from smoke inhalation. Veterinarians and animal officers with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office helped to treat the horses that were rescued. Ammons also says no people were injured in the fire and several of the horses' owners live outside of North Carolina. An initial investigation indicates the fire was was likely caused by electrical issues, but Ammons couldn't confirm the cause of the fire because an investigation is ongoing.
