Asheville firefighter to be remembered at public service in Weaverville

Asheville Fire Department Engineer Will Willis will be remembered at a public service starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Brookstone Church, 90 Griffee Road. Willis died Feb. 27, on his 34th birthday, of a rare form of kidney cancer. Willis, a native of Madison County, was a career firefighter, joining the Ebbs Chapel Volunteer Fire Department in Mars Hill at age 16. He eventually became chief deputy. He became a paid firefighter in 2009 at the Swannanoa Fire Department and for the past eight years worked as an engineer with the Asheville Fire Department. Willis is survived by his wife of 13 years, Bonnie, and their four children, Walker, 9, Hudson, 6, Darby, 4, and Chauncey, 2. He was an elder at the Burnsville Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was also the "W" in the M and W Electrical business that he ran with his best friend, Kevin Morton.
