A fire extensively damaged a home on Figure Eight Island Wednesday afternoon. New Hanover County Fire Chief Donnie Hall said high winds made the fire, which engulfed the oceanfront home at 88 S. Beach Road, difficult to battle. The blaze was first reported around noon. “It probably took us an hour to get it under control,” Hall said. “We’ve got a horrible wind blowing. This wind is vicious.” New Hanover County was aided by crews from the Wilmington Fire Department. Hall said the home was not occupied and was undergoing renovations when the fire happened. He said construction crews inside the home at the time of the fire escaped without injury. No firefighters were injured battling the fire.
