Separate fires severely damaged two homes in Currituck County on Tuesday, with one of the fires displacing at least four people. Currituck Fire-EMS Chief Chip Melton said the first fire was reported Tuesday morning in the 1200 block of Coral Lane in Corolla on the Currituck Outer Banks. The second fire was reported Tuesday afternoon in the 100 block of Wedgewood Drive, a residential area northwest of the Currituck Courthouse. According to Melton, the fire at the home on Wedgewood Drive displaced four people, including a child with special needs. Officials believe the fire, reported at 3:37 p.m., originated in the kitchen and spread to the attic, Melton said. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. Responding were firefighters from Currituck Fire-EMS, Crawford Township and Moyock Township. Also assisting were firefighters from Chesapeake and Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex in Virginia. No injuries were reported in the blaze, Melton said. The house’s occupants are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, he said.
