Multiple fire departments worked to put out a fire that shut down southbound I-77 in Statesville Monday afternoon. The right lane of southbound I-77 is closed from I-40 to Exit 50 near Broad Street. Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see firefighters inside the truck hosing off dozens of spaghetti squash. Drivers can use Exit 51B for I-40 West as an alternate route. From I-40 West take Exit 148 for U.S.64. Turn left onto U.S. 64 East and follow to U.S. 70 East. Continue on U.S. 70 East back to I-77. The Statesville Fire Department is asking drivers to avoid the area and drive safely around town as vehicles begin to take detours. Officials said at one point, the fire caused 6 miles of congestion on the interstate.
