At least 36 people have been killed as Florence battered the coast off North and South Carolina on Friday and into the weekend. As of Wednesday morning, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety has reported 27 storm-related fatalities. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported having six storm-related deaths, not including two more Tuesday night when a van was overtaken by floodwater. Officials in Virginia have reported one death related to tornadoes connected to the Florence system.
