As the sun set over Harkers island Wednesday evening, days after Hurricane Florence left the area badly damaged, residents find themselves still without power, without air conditioning and running low on supplies. Much of the recovery process on the island has been operating out of the islands Fire/Rescue station, where Harkers Island Fire/Rescue Chief Chad Mann identified one issue more pressing than any other, saying, "People need food. That's it. Everybody who comes here is hungry. They're eating MRE's, they just don't have any food." And it's not just people who have been struggling to eat following the storm. According to the Craven & Carteret County Displaced Dogs & Cats organization, pets became a logistics issue for many people as they were evacuating, as well as during the storm. Many people, as a result, were forced to give up their animals to shelters simply because they could not feed them.
