A chicken house on Huffman Fork Road in Purlear was damaged by fire but the structure and about 14,000 chicks inside were saved by firefighters late Wednesday afternoon. The Champion Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze about 5 p.m. and was assisted by the Millers Creek and Cricket fire departments. Champion Fire Chief Craig Hollar said it was a working structure fire when firefighters arrived on the scene. He said Champion Deputy Chief Zach Hollar and Capt. Daniel Brown made the initial attack and suppressed the fire.
