VIDEO: The Minot Fire Department spent the afternoon conducting ice rescue training. Firefighters went through a step-by-step process drill to stay prepared should a real life thin ice accident happen. In an emergency situation, firefighters will first assess everything and then go through the four safety options. First they try to reach a victim will a pole. If that fails, they send a bag out to reel a victim in. Next, they go by boat if that's possible. Lastly, a firefighter will jump into the water. One drill they practiced involved a firefighter jumping into the water to save the victim. The firefighter attached a rope around the victim and had the men on shore pull them both back. (Sean Snorek, City of Minot Firefighter) "Getting them out quickly because time is of the essence because they say you have roughly a half hour in that cold water before you start losing control of everything." Firefighters encourage people to be aware of the dangers of thin ice.
