The Police and Fire Committee discussed an ordinance in regards to the Jamestown Fire Department and their jurisdiction Thursday. During the meeting, Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther reported that their underwater search equipment and boat were given to them courtesy of a federal grant, and that required them to be on standby should they be needed by another agency. Reuther pointed out that as long as the request did not put the Jamestown Fire Department into a hardship, they would be required to respond to a request. Such as one by the Rapid City, South Dakota Fire Department. Ruether mentioned that he had backups in place in that event. Chief Ruether said that he was required to contact the Mayor or City Administrator before they commit to a situation. Councilman Ramone Gumke brought up the fact that the city trusted their Jamestown Police Chief to make calls on immediate situations like that, the same should go for the Jamestown Fire Department. The City Council unanimously approved to re-amend the ordinance to allow for Chief Reuther to have the authority to just contact either the Mayor or City Administrator in the event of their services and equipment being needed outside of the city.
