A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon after a farmer hit a rock while cutting hay. According to the Mandan Rural Fire Department, the fire sparked just before 5 p.m. in a field off of 45th Street and Spring Creek Road south of Mandan. The blaze burned up about 20 or 25 acres before firefighters were able to get it out. Dry and windy conditions fanned the flames, leading to threats to area structures. "At first it was okay but then with the wind it was getting close and we were having trouble gaining access due to the creek and the low spots that were in it but then we saved it,” Fire Chief Lynn Gustin said. “It didn't get in anybody's yards, it got close but it didn't get into anything."
