A fire that started in a garage has damaged a Grand Island duplex, according to the G.I. Fire Department. Shift Commander Scott Kuehl said crews were originally called to structure fires at two different addresses around 9:55 p.m. Thursday, but only found flames at 804 North Adams Street. Kuehl said firefighters searched the home, thinking people may still be inside, before fighting the fire. After, fire crews took about 10 minutes to extinguish the flames. He said the garage gutted while the duplex sustained smoke damage and fire damage in one room. Kuehl estimates $8,000 to $10,000 in loss to the home. He said "improper discarded smoking materials" started the fire.
