David Szafrajda was charged Monday in Hall County Court with first-degree arson in connection with a fire Oct. 10 at Pine Crest Apartments, 4870 W. Highway 30. In the arrest affidavit, Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy John Hinkle wrote that at about 5:10 a.m., he saw smoke coming out of the windows of Apartment 2. All of the lights were on in that apartment. A neighbor had called 911. Also from his car, Hinkle wrote that he saw a male standing at the stove in the kitchen area and a small flame on the stove. Hinkle originally thought food had burned.
