PHOTO: It started with a woman hearing a kitten meowing from 20 feet below a steel grate. That led to an attempted rescue that left a man injured in downtown Omaha on Wednesday morning. Peter Nelson was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition. He was attempting to rescue the kitten from a ventilation shaft on the south side of a parking garage attached to the Omaha World-Herald Building at 14th and Douglas Streets. Nelson works for Colliers International, which manages the building. He and another man first removed a steel grate that covers the shaft — which resembles a concrete box about 20 feet deep, 10 feet long and 8 feet wide — and then lowered a ladder into it.
