A suitcase too close to a space heater in a central Lincoln apartment caught fire and caused $60,000 damage late Monday night, a fire department spokeswoman said. Just after 11 p.m., the fire started in the basement apartment at 2313 Orchard St., Lincoln Fire and Rescue Firefighter-Paramedic Nancy Crist said Tuesday. Five adults and a child were inside at the time and safely evacuated, Crist said. The fire spread up the wall into the first-floor apartment and took fire crews 30 minutes to extinguish, she said. The home didn’t have any smoke detectors, and the furnace didn’t work, she said. This marks the third fire in the last week in which the building involved didn’t have smoke detectors.
