Personnel was a big topic of discussion during the city’s last budgeting process. It is coming up once again. The Grand Island City Council held a budget study session Tuesday for the upcoming fiscal year. The council was told that there is a need to increase personnel in both the police and fire departments. Those public safety areas were hit last year when the budget for 2018 was passed. The Grand Island Police Department lost two officer positions and the Grand Island Fire Department agreed to a wage freeze for two years to prevent losing any staff. Police Chief Robert Falldorf told the council Tuesday that they are 10 officers down in the patrol division, three of which are officers who are on light duty because of injuries.
