VIDEO: Several space heaters plugged into one outlet has been ruled the cause of an early morning fire near 56th and Madison, Fire Inspector Donald Gross said. He said the residence, which was built in the attic of a detached garage, couldn't handle the amount of electricity the heaters require. The resident left them plugged in when he left the home Monday night, and the fire broke out around 5:00 a.m., Gross said. He said this is a fairly common cause of fire for this time of year, and it's important to remember not to overload your outlets, especially with space heaters. Lincoln Fire and Rescue released some safety tips when it comes to using space heaters. They tell you to never plug a heater into an extension cord or power strip. Keep them at least three feet away from any flammable items, like curtains or bedding. The resident wasn't home at the time. The fire caused $17,000 in damage and loss.
