Firefighters were called away from the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Sussex County Community College Wednesday evening to respond to a fire on Trinity Street. Several Newton Fire Department trucks, including one holding a large American flag over the ceremony proceedings, raced to the scene shortly after the flag was raised for the start of the ceremony. The fire caused extensive damage to the upper level of a three-floor, multi-unit dwelling, located in the center of the block. No injuries were reported to any of the building’s occupants, all of whom — with the exception of a cat belonging to one of the residents — evacuated the building on their own when the fire began in an upstairs bedroom shortly after 5 p.m.
