A truck moving sand on the beach Wednesday morning went up in flames, officials said.
The Ocean City Fire Department responded at 7:30 a.m. after getting a call of a truck ablaze on the beach near Fifth Street, said Doug Bergen, the city’s public information officer.
The dump truck was being operated by a city Public Works employee who was moving sand to an eroded part of the beach. Bergen said the work was routine and permitted by the state, but not part of any beach replenishment.
The employee was not injured in the incident, Bergen said. He said the fire posed no environmental concern and firefighters prevented debris from entering the ocean during the blaze.
