Small plane catches fire at Medford airport after pilot starts engine

A small, single-engine plane caught fire Sunday morning while on the ground at Flying W Airport in Medford, according to police. Medford police received a call about 9:30 a.m. reporting an airplane on fire near the south ramp, police said in a Facebook post. When officers arrived, the fire had been extinguished by firefighters from Medford and Lumberton. Police said the fire had been in the engine compartment of the plane.
