Close to two dozen people were displaced after a fire broke out in a first-floor apartment on East 22nd Street in Paterson early Tuesday morning. Firefighters responded at about 5:25 a.m. to the two-alarm fire, said Deputy Chief Hector Almeyda. The fire is still under investigation but Almeyda said it appears to have started in a first-floor apartment before spreading to the apartment above. The building has 13 units, and 21 people were displaced. The extent of the damage is unknown, but Almeyda said he suspects there is some major damage in some of the apartments. No injuries were reported for any of the 45 firefighters or civilians. The scene was cleared at 8:40 a.m.
