First-responders and civilians alike challenged themselves Sunday in an event designed to pay honor those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on America and aid the families of fallen firefighters. The City of Bridgeton Fire Department 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was held at the Bridgeton Housing Authority's senior citizen high-rise on East Commerce Street. After an opening ceremony, participants began climbing the stairs in the 11-story building. Climbers participating took as many steps as they could. Some people turned out to cheer on the participants. The climb helped to recreate the experience firefighters had as they scaled the stairwells inside of the Twin Towers of the 110-story World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11. The goal for many participants Sunday was to make the Bridgeton climb 10 times, the equivalent of 110 stories.
