Woman critical, man hospitalized after being pulled from Newark blaze that killed family dog

A woman was in critical condition on Tuesday night after being rescued from a fire that erupted in a 3-story Newark home. The woman, whose name was not released, and a man were both pulled from the flames and taken to area hospitals, but a family dog died in the blaze, according to a release from the Newark Police Department. The condition of the man, who also was not identified, was not released by police. The fire was reported at 6:45 p.m. in the basement of at a multifamily home at 199 Sunset Ave., located just one block from the Newark Fire Prevention Office. The fire was placed under control by 7:09 p.m., officials said. The cause and origin of the fire was still under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit, the release stated.
