State police got an unusual call last week, reporting that a woman had set her husband on fire. Police reports state Layla Coriz and James Coriz got into an argument while he was working on a truck outside their home in Chimayo. According to investigators, Layla Coriz had crashed another car into the truck, pushing it into the side of the garage. At some point, James Coriz went inside to get ready for bed. Police say that's when his wife went inside, poured gas on him and lit him on fire. The man's cousin was shocked to hear the news. “I think it's devastating, especially this portion of town,” said Albert Rael. “It's a pretty good community, but things happen.” Layla had her first court appearance Monday. She is being charged with aggravated arson and second-degree attempted murder. She's being held at Rio Arriba County Jail on $100,000 bail. Her husband suffered second- and third-degree burns, mostly from the chest up.
