New developments emerged Monday into two fires in the Four Corners that destroyed a handful of homes. Fire officials say both fires were human caused and one firefighter was hurt.
Firefighters say all of this could be prevented. Friday evening the wind was already blowing when someone started burning weeds. That fire got out of control quick.
“As soon as crews arrived on scene we had three mobile homes on fire,” said San Juan County Fire Chief Craig Daugherty.
Those three homes went up in just a matter of minutes despite the county declaring Friday a no-burn day.
“This person didn't have a burn permit, and the consequences are unfortunately three lost homes,” Daugherty said.
Firefighters stayed busy. Saturday was another no-burn day, and another preventable fire led to more lost homes. This one, fire officials said, was likely caused by a discarded cigarette. Two homes, five vehicles and multiple outbuildings all burned to ashes.
