A fire that broke out Monday night in the forested heights overlooking the Aqua Fria subdivision of Ruidoso Downs continued to burn Tuesday, but U.S. Fire Service public information officer Loretta Benavides reported Tuesday afternoon that the blaze remained confined within a three-acre area. Benavides said a 20-member hot shot crew had arrived and was moving in to help out the crews that Ruidoso Downs Mayor Gary Williams said had been working the fire since it was first spotted. “It’s not going anywhere at the moment,” Williams said. “We feel pretty good about where it is now.” The Inspiration Fire broke out about 8:30 p.m. Monday and raised a bright pillar of flame against the dark backdrop of the woods. By morning little was visible from the Ruidoso Downs post office but a wispy haze of smoke above the treetops. Williams said the fire was being fought between two ridges above Aqua Fria in an area known as Turkey Creek Canyon. He said no structures were threatened, although authorities alerted nearby residents Monday night that an evacuation might be ordered if conditions worsened.
