The Sisters Fire began burning in the Gila National Forest near the Twin Sisters, on the Continental Divide Trail. According to Public Affairs Officer for the Gila National Forest, Punky Moore, the fire began Sunday and has burned about 15 acres which is traveling in a northeast direction.
She stated about 28 personnel have been assigned to the fire and two engines and two helicopters are being utilized to attack the blaze from the ground and the air. An air tanker was also seen in action.
"The smoke people are seeing is from the vegetation that is burning inside the fire lines," Moore said. "Those lines held overnight. The personnel assigned to the fire will continue to strengthen those lines and try to contain the fire. This is a full suppression operation."
No mandatory evacuations have been ordered despite the fire being about two miles from Pinos Altos. Moore said the fire is under investigation and it will continue to be managed until it's completely out.
Flames were estimated to be around six to 12 inches high, burning through grass and ponderosa pine. Moore also commented about the way the the crews had to get the fire by parking and hiking over rugged terrain to reach it. Forest Fire crews and the Silver City Hotshots were the crews dispatched to the scene.
