The Lightning-caused Spur Fire which is in the Gila National Forest in the Quemado Ranger District has grown to approximately 27 acres. According to a news release, the fire was first reported by the Eagle Lookout Saturday and it’s going to be managed by the Las Cruces Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team which will be under a confine and contain strategy. The fire is near the town of Luna and personnel will attempt to stop or redirect the fire as it approaches certain boundaries in an area north of Reserve. Less restrictive actions will take place when the fire moves south which will help reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health. Actions are being taken to keep the fire south of the 3020 Road. Some factors that were taken into consideration to confine and contain this fire were roads, trails and natural barriers that are going to be used to contain it and reduce exposure to firefighters. Other issues included the potential of the fire to spread over time, the location of the incident, previous fire history in the area and cultural resource concerns. The fire has been described as a surface fire that is burning in ponderosa pine and grass with flame lengths of less than one foot. Approximately 15 personnel are assigned to the Spur Fire.
