Firefighters in Bernalillo County got quite the surprise on Sunday. It wasn't a wildfire or some other natural disaster, but it did come from nature.
Firefighters in rural Tijeras said they encountered a young bear, nearly the size of a large dog, sleeping under some fire trucks.
"It's was interesting. My paramedic found the bear and said, 'You'll never figure out what we found.'" Bernalillo County Fire Lt. Steve Vaughan said. "'It's in the bays. We have a bear in the bay.'" The firefighters said they had no reservations about approaching it.
"Honestly, it looked like he was coming into our station to die," Vaughan said. "He was super lethargic and didn't look well. He crawled all the way under one of our big trucks and was hiding out there."
