There were some emotional moments and tears shed at Monday night’s Belen council meeting, as one of the city’s favorite sons announced his retirement from the fire service.
“I never thought an after-school hobby I started in high school would become a full fledged public safety career,” said Belen fire chief Manny Garcia. “I stand before God, my family and you elected officials tonight to say that it is with great pride, tremendous privilege and gratification, that I formally announce my retirement.”
Garcia, who was appointed chief in 2007, has been a part of the city’s fire department for 20 years, starting as a junior volunteer when he was 16. His retirement will be effective Friday, Dec. 28.
