What began as a summer rainstorm ended with millions of gallons of water moving silt and sand through the streets of the Hub City, damaging homes and businesses alike.
After nearly 2 inches of rain fell in about a half an hour Thursday evening, a 40-foot break of the Belen Highline Canal occurred on the west end of Hansen Avenue at about 7 p.m. The water then reached the New Belen Acecia east of Mesa Road, which took the river of water down Castillo and Didier avenues and onto Main Street. Up since 6 a.m. last Thursday, Monica Kerr is not happy.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Kerr said, surveying the inches of thick, slick mud settled in her yard. “I heard they were supposed to fix that, but didn’t.”
