A fire that started Thursday (June 14) at Vermejo Park Ranch in Colfax County has been monstly contained as of Sunday (June 17). The Cottonwood Fire started in an area about 12 miles north of Cimarron, according to New Mexico Fire Information, a statewide database with daily updates of active wildfires in the Land of Enchantment.
As of Friday, the fire was 10 percent contained. But by Sunday, the fire was 80 percent contained, thanks to wet and cool weather that slowed fire activity enough for crews to construct a fireline around most of the blaze. Initally, at least four firefighting crews and engines, as well as one helicopter, responded to the fire burning on a private ranch adjacent to the Carson National Forest's Valle Vidal that's owned by media mogul Ted Turner.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
