The world of fire fighting has typically been a man’s world, described as a brotherhood and sometimes viewed as a boys club. Female firefighters in Valencia County say while it’s a hard job — physically and mentally demanding — becoming one of the guys has been taken in stride. Jennifer Edmunds, an EMT and firefighter with the Los Lunas Fire Department, completed her probationary year with the department in July. “I wasn’t really treated differently. We’re like brothers and sisters — like family,” Edmunds said. The biggest disadvantage Edmunds says she might have is her height — at 5 foot, 2 inches tall, she sometimes has to put a little extra push into lifting equipment, she said.
