Santa Fe fire and police investigators are looking into the cause of a suspicious Tuesday morning house fire on Siringo Road, Fire Marshal Rey Gonzales Jr. said.
Firefighters responded to calls about flames at a vacant structure on Siringo Road near Camino Consuelo around 6:40 a.m., where they found an unoccupied, single-family home in flames, Santa Fe Fire Department Battalion Chief Carl Crook said.
The fire quickly reached the roof, Crook said, so firefighters used water trucks to knock down the flames and help prevent other structures from being affected.
Fire investigators confirmed Tuesday that the house was unoccupied, Gonzales said. However, Crook said neighbors and police told firefighters the dwelling was frequented by vagrants.
Investigators haven’t determined whether the fire was arson, caused by a power outage or other factors, Gonzales said. They collected material from the scene that could have fingerprints and possibly accelerants, and sent them to a lab for investigation.
