Firefighters snuffed out a small brush fire on the north edge of Sparks that temporarily left more than 5,000 residents without power. Sparks fire marshal Robert King said the fire that broke out early Wednesday afternoon was contained at about 30 acres (12 hectares). No structures were threatened, but NV Energy said damage to its equipment triggered an outage that affected 5,760 customers. All power had been restored by 3:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. King said it started on U.S. Bureau of Land Management property near Disc Drive and Pyramid Way at Wedekind Park.
