Two lightning-sparked wildfires that scorched sections of Peavine Mountain are out as of Monday morning, according to the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest.
The fires were two of at least a half-dozen blazes that started Saturday evening when a strong lightning-producing thunderstorm rolled through the area.
The 192-acre Hoge Fire was contained Sunday evening and the 120-acre Kiowa Fire was called late Sunday night. Firefighters had a difficult time accessing the Kiowa Fire, which was burning in a relatively inaccessible area of the mountain. Crews were forced to hike in or use ATV's, which led to a slower containment.
Washoe County is reminding residents to sign up for its Red Alert notification system, a telephone-based emergency alert system.
