A sheriff says a wildfire just a few miles from northeast Nevada's largest city was ignited by an off-road vehicle that was destroyed by flames. Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts told the Elko Daily Free Press the fire that charred nearly 6 square miles (15.5 square kilometers) started Saturday evening and burned toward Elko. No injuries were reported and no structures were burned. Some nearby residents who voluntarily evacuated Saturday night were allowed back into their neighborhood on Sunday. Fire officials estimated containment late Sunday at about 10 percent and said the burn area covered almost 3,800 acres (324 hectares). Hundreds of firefighters were helped by aircraft during daylight hours. Elko is a city of about 21,000 residents, about midway between Reno and Salt Lake City.
